A cataract is a cloudy area in the lens of the eye.
A normal lens is clear and lets light pass to the back of the eye.
Cataracts block some of that light and as they develop, it becomes increasingly difficult for the person to see.
Cataracts are a normal part of aging.
Cataracts can be corrected with surgery.
Cataract surgery is performed on an outpatient basis.
Your visit at the surgery center will last approximately 2- 2 hours and most are able to go home using the eye that just had surgery.
Your vision, although improved, will take several days to settle.
Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness and visual impairment in the United States.
A simple painless eye exam can detect the disease.
With early detection and treatment, glaucoma can usually be controlled and blindness prevented.
There are two main types of glaucoma, open-angle and angle-closure.
Open-angle glaucoma is the most common type of glaucoma and involves fluid in the eye not draining properly through the trabecular meshwork.
Angle-closure glaucoma involves a sudden buildup of pressure in the eye and poor drainage because the angle between the iris and the cornea is too narrow.
The cornea is the clear front of the eye that covers the colored iris and the round pupil.
Light is focused while passing through the cornea so we can see.
To stay clear the cornea must be healthy.
If the cornea is damaged it may become swollen or scarred.
In either case, its smoothness and clarity may be lost.
The scars, swelling or an irregular shape cause the cornea to scatter or distort light, resulting in glare or blurred vision.
DSAEK is the latest technique in corneal transplantation.
Short for Descemet-stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty, DSAEK offers clear post-operative vision and short recovery time to patients in need of new corneas.
