In 1970 North Bend native John T. Flaxel, M.D., opened his ophthalmology practice in North Bend. The office was located in the office building across from Keizer Hospital on Meade Street. In the same building were North Bend Medical Center, Bay Optical, Bay Pharmacy, Robert Klever, O.D., and Vernon Klever, DDM. In 1975 Arthur F. S. Steele, M.D., joined the practice and the office was enlarged to accommodate 2 full-time ophthalmologists.

In 1979 Drs. Flaxel and Steele built a new office building at 3585 Broadway in North Bend and formed Bay Eye Clinic. Dr. Flaxel semi-retired in 1995 and Debra A. Graham, M.D., joined the practice to assume his patients' care. Dr. Steele fully retired and moved to Portland in 2005. Dr. Ottemiller retired in 2018. Dr. Brandon Harr, O.D. will be joining the clinic August of 2020.

Services
Over 5% of people have serious eye diseases or vision problems.
Unfortunately, many eye diseases are silent - with subtle or no symptoms, even in some of the most serious conditions and vision loss may be permanent.
Every week we see concerned people who have lost vision or have a serious eye problem because they didn't know (or forgot) that eye disease can be detected with a regular eye checkup.
Don't put off eye care.
It is important for you to visit us regularly, not just when your glasses need changing.
In case of an emergency during regular office hours, call our office ( 541-756-2584 ) and a work-in appointment will be scheduled.
After hours, on weekends, and holidays, one of the Bay Eye Clinic ophthalmologists is always on call.
If you have an eye related emergency and need to reach our after hours answering service please call ( 541-269-3283 ).
If for any reason the ophthalmologist on call cannot be reached in a timely fashion, go to the Emergency Room at Bay Area Hospital, where the Emergency Room physician will see you and contact one of us.
Within our building is Bay Optical Lab with a full staff of experienced, certified opticians and the largest selection of new frames on the Oregon Coast.
We have a well-trained staff to help us provide you with the contact lens best suited for your needs and the latest in contact lens care.
We have available a full range of contact lenses to aid us in your contact lens fitting.
We fit using disposable, soft, tinted, astigmatic toric, bifocal, gas permeable, and therapeutic lenses.
