Services
Your eye has a natural lens that focuses light into an image on the retina, which converts this image into a nerve signal that is transmitted to the brain.
The lens is normally clear at birth, but with time grows larger in a manner similar to an onion, layer by layer.
Eventually, the lens becomes thicker, more opaque, discolored, and changes from clear to yellow or white or even dark brown.
These changes block light from passing through in a normal manner, decreasing vision.
These changes to the lens are referred to as a cataract.
Botox can enhance your appearance by softening lines of expression (aka wrinkles) around the eyes and face.
It can also be used medically to treat various types of muscle spasms.
How Does it Work?
When Botox is injected into a muscle, it weakens the muscle.
Anatomically, our facial muscles exist under the facial skin.
When the muscle contracts during facial expression, the skin moves with the muscle and a crease is formed over time.
Normally this is not a problem, but as we age, the skin thins and the elastic property of skin diminishes.
Diabetes can cause damage to the eyes in many ways, including causing cataract development, double vision, and diabetic retinopathy.
The good news is that patients who are able to keep their blood sugars under tight control can often live their entire life without ever losing vision from diabetes.
In addition to diet control, exercise, and medication, close monitoring of blood sugar will help patients with diabetes preserve their vision.
Patients with diabetes need to have a yearly dilated eye exam to check for diabetic retinopathy.
Macular degeneration is a dreaded term as it is a common cause of blindness in the United States.
Macular degeneration can ruin reading and central vision because it destroys the most sensitive part of the retina known as the macula.
It typically occurs in elderly patients, but it can also develop in younger patients (especially those with a strong family history).
People can reduce their risk of vision loss from macular degeneration by reducing the amount of UV rays entering the eye and by consuming a diet rich in anti-oxidants and other nutrients.
