He learned the craft of manufacturing eyeglasses at 17 from his step father, Paul H. West, and went on to obtain education from Hillsborough Community College, University of South Florida, and Nova Southeastern University.
He has practiced in many areas of optometry including commercial eye clinics, skilled nursing facilities, and private practice.
Dr. Smith has become a specialist in mobile eye care.
He routinely makes visits to skilled and assisted living facilities in the Tampa area.

This device gives the doctor an estimated eye glass prescription based on the length and shape of the eye.
If the eye is longer than average then Myopia (near sightedness) is present.
If the eye is shorter than average then Hyperopia (far sightedness) is present.
Finally, if the eye has a shape like a football versus a golf ball then the eye is said to have Astigmatism.
This instrument is essential when there is a loss of visual field.
Visual field defects can be attributed to Glaucoma, Brain Tumors, Stokes, Brain Damage, and Multiple Sclerosis.

We have technologies in office that most offices DO NOT like the: GDX VCC (glaucoma and optic nerve testing), Topcon Corneal Topography, Sonogage Pachymeter, Oculus Easy Field Visual Field machine, an onsite lab, digital blood pressure monitor and a Volk Pictor retinal camera.
We pride ourselves at practicing at levels higher than the standard of eye care in the Tampa region by having advanced testing technologies like: digital imaging devices that are office based or transportable to document and educate you on your eye health conditions.

At this time, we cannot fill outside prescriptions from: Mediciad, Amerigroup, Sunshine State, any Medicare or Medicaid HMO.
If you have vision insurance, please bring in all cards so that we may contact your carrier to find a list of your benefits.
