The IAO recommends that a healthy adult get a baseline eye exam at age 40, even if they have no history of eye problems or eye disease. Those who have chronic conditions, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, may require more frequent exams. Those over age 65 who may be concerned about cost or lack of health insurance, the American Academy of Ophthalmology's EyeCare America program offers eligible seniors a comprehensive eye exam and up to one year of treatment at no out-of-pocket cost.

Ophthalmologists are Medical Doctors (M.D.) or Doctors of Osteopathy (D.O.) who specialize in the medical and surgical care of the eyes and in the prevention of eye disease and injury. The Indiana Academy of Ophthalmology promotes the highest quality, comprehensive vision, medical, and surgical eye care. We also provide professional advocacy, education, and value-added business services to our members.

If your eyes are healthy and vision is good, you should have a complete exam by your ophthalmologist once in your 20s and twice in your 30s.
