Most cataracts are age-related but can occur prematurely from genetics, trauma or disease states like diabetes or steroid use. Cataracts are very common in older people and are the number one cause of reversible vision problems in the elderly. By age 80, more than 50% of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery.
