Dr. Tom Mahon was born on a US Air Force base in Japan.
While he spent his early years in Charleston, he has called Georgia his home for much of his life.
He attended Furman University and La Grange College to complete his biology degree, but eventually made the decision to devote his interests to eye care.
Both of his grandfathers had macular degeneration, and he was inspired to help people in the same way his father had as a pediatrician.
Once he made this decision, Dr. Mahon attended professional school at Nova Southeastern University of the Health Sciences in Florida.

Regular eye exams are an important tool in eye health for detecting and preventing eye diseases and evaluating the overall health of the patient.
Some diseases, such as glaucoma, develop gradually without symptoms or vision loss, so patients may not notice that anything is wrong until significant and irreversible damage as been done.
Early detection of eye diseases allows for a better choice of treatment options and a reduced risk of permanent damage.
Patients should schedule a comprehensive eye exam every year.

According to a published Ophthalmology study, 25% of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) cases go undetected - even with regular examinations using regular imaging tools.
What's more, additional studies show 78% of AMD patients do not seek treatment until their visual acuity is irreversibly damaged.
Structural changes (the appearance of drusen) in the retina are not always easily discernible.
They often become evident only after AMD has progressed from a subclinical state.
Impaired dark adaptation, as measured by AdaptDx, is 90.6% sensitive and 90.5% specific in identifying the earliest onset of AMD.
