Services
After checking in at the reception you will have your vision checked, your eye pressure measured, and your pupils dilated before you are seen by either of our doctors.
Typically you will have to wait at least 30 minutes for your pupils to be adequately dilated for examination.
First visits can often take two hours, more if treatment can be provided at the time of diagnosis.
We provide disposable sunglasses for your convenience, or you may opt to bring our own.
If you have had trouble with your vision due to pupil dilation in the past and if treatment such as laser is required, we will require that you have someone to drive you home.
We want your first visit to Wagner Macula & Retina Center to be a smooth and pleasant experience.
We are dedicated to providing you with the excellent, personalized care you deserve.
When your appointment is completed, we want you to have all the information you need to fully understand your medical condition and its treatment options.
Please let us know how we can improve your visit with us.
Plan to arrive 15 minutes early for a first appointment to allow us to create your medical record.
If you bring these forms with you, you will not need to arrive early for your appointment.
One of the most frequent causes of vision impairment in the United States and throughout the rest of the world is diabetic retinopathy.
Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that causes damage to the blood vessels of the retina-the light-sensitive tissue that lines the back part of the eye, allowing you to see fine detail.
The longer someone has diabetes, and the less his or her blood sugars are controlled, the more likely the possibility that person will develop diabetic retinopathy.
Dr. Alan Wagner and Dr. Kapil Kapoor at the Wagner Macula & Retina Center serve the residents of the Hampton Roads region of Virginia & North Carolina.
The doctors are board-certified ophthalmologists who specialize in flashes and floaters along with surgeries used to correct many eye disorders.
You may sometimes see small specks or clouds moving in your field of vision.
These are called floaters.
You can often see them when looking at a plain background, like a blank wall or blue sky.
Floaters are time clumps of gel or cells inside the vitreous, the clear gel-like laid that fills the inside of your eye.
Retinal artery occlusion is a blockage in one of the small arteries that carry blood to the retina-the layer of tissue in the back of the eye that senses light.
Retinal arteries may become blocked by a blood clot or fat deposits that get stuck in the arteries.
These blockages are more likely if there is any hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) in the eye.
Clots may travel from other parts of the body and block an artery in the retina.
The most common sources of clots are the carotid artery in the neck and the heart.
